Modern cosmology strives to explain the late time acceleration of the universe. The commonly accepted candidate is dark energy, appearing as Λ on the matter side of the Einstein equation. However dark energy leaves several unresolved questions and other popular candidate explanations include modifications to the geometrical portion of Einstein's equations such as f(R) gravity in which the Einstein-Hilbert action becomes a general function of the Ricci-scalar. To match solar system tests, f(R) gravity can be formed to be a function with a density dependence such that General Relativity is restored in high density environments while yet producing modified on large scales of low density to be able to cause the desired accelerated expansion. Due in part to the transition region, this formation is highly non-linear, and the model must be very carefully compared with ΛCDM on these non-linear scales in order to distinguish between the two models.
<img src="http://payload138.cargocollective.com/1/5/178500/5065519/Screen Shot 2013-02-26 at 4.19.30 PM_640.png" width="640" height="177" width_o="655" height_o="181" src_o="http://payload138.cargocollective.com/1/5/178500/5065519/Screen Shot 2013-02-26 at 4.19.30 PM_o.png" data-mid="27166660" border="0" align="left"/>
Thus, methods to explore the non-linear regime in f(R) gravity are of the highest theoretical importance. Yet, due to the enhanced difficulty solving the coupled scalar field and modified Poisson equations, only in recent years has it become possible to numerically explore the consequences of f(R) gravity on the cosmological scale approaching the resolution of cosmological N-body simulations in ΛCDM. In this work I build upon the work of Li 2012 and use ECOSMOG for the first time to perform a zoom simulation, enabling exploration of the effect of f(R) gravity models on halo properties at the cluster scale in a cosmological environment to unprecedented accuracy.

I try my best to keep in good shape to be ready for any adventure, mentally and physically. I do a number of adventure sports, pushing myself out of my comfort zone.

I'm PADI certified and have been diving in Qatar, Egypt, the Bahamas and Hawaii, where I had the chance of a lifetime to dive with 25+ manta rays feeding at night. My next diving trip is to the Philippines where I hope to get my advanced open water certification.

I currently primarily enjoy skiing, climbing, hiking and running. I'm training for a half-marathon and running my first race–a team relay race, in Switzerland in May, 2013.

Since 2012 I have been involved in roller derby, and beginning in 2013 I have been a proud member of the Zurich City Roller Girls, skating under the alias Supa Kollida, number 33. Roller derby is a full contact, traditionally female sport, and combines athleticism with a community spirit. I train twice a week in preparation for our matches or "bouts" upcoming around Europe. I'll also be teaching the beginner's or "rookie" course in Fall 2013.

Myself and my team were recently featured on Swiss national TV. Check us out!

In the past I've studied a number of martial arts, including kung fu, jiu-jitsu and aikido. I've also had the chance to skydive, do an olympic ski jump into a pool, and go snorkeling in Iceland in the winter.

TEDxZurichI am proud to have been on the organizing team of TEDxZurich 2011 and 2012. With the help of great sponsors, including the Swiss National Television Network, at which the event was held, amazing speakers and performers, and a full house of 450 attendees, we celebrated and shared “ideas worth spreading”.

In 2011, I was on the speakers committee, moon lighted with a bit of tech help, and the day of was rushing around making sure all the speakers were happy and prepared for their big moment on stage.

For the 2012 event I was more heavily involved on the technical production end. Blog post with videos here.

For the 2013 event I have past on my hat to the next generation of organizers and will enjoy being part of this special event once more, this time as a participant.
International Space Apps ChallengeFor the 2012 event I helped to organize speakers, topics and participants for the Lausanne site and attended the hackathon as a participant and mentor myself, working a bit with the talented Krusi brothers on a platform for processing lunar data in order to find optimal landing sites for spacecrafts. 2013 I will be attending as a participant only.<img src="http://payload7.cargocollective.com/1/5/178500/2445067/687474703a2f2f7331342e706f7374696d6167652e6f72672f697532356f686167782f636f6c6f725f53686f745f6865616465722e706e67_640.png" width="640" height="208" width_o="871" height_o="283" src_o="http://payload7.cargocollective.com/1/5/178500/2445067/687474703a2f2f7331342e706f7374696d6167652e6f72672f697532356f686167782f636f6c6f725f53686f745f6865616465722e706e67_o.png" data-mid="28988828" border="0" align="left"/>

I hatched a plan to educate myself in a more structured manner on what exactly Wikileaks stands for, its history, and its possible futures with the idea of developing a more concrete and informed opinion. As part of this project, I read every single source cited in the Wikileaks Wikipedia article circa November 2010, and developed some code along the way to help me aggregate and analyse this information. I gave a talk about the project at Security BSides Berlin 2010.

Teaching: InstructorMIT MEET, Y2. Computer Science, Introduction to Java, Summer 2007.MIT MEET, Y3. Computer Science, Android Application Development, Summer 2013. MIT Global Startup Labs: University of the Philippines Diliman Program, Lead Technical Instructor, Summer 2013.AssistantElectricity and Magnetism, ESG MIT, 2004.Mathematical Methods for Physicists I, Fall 2010 This course covered a broad swath of mathematical concepts: elementary calculus, linear algebra, vector calculus, Fourier series and transforms, ordinary differential equations, calculus of variations, tensor analysis, functions of a complex variable and more. We largely followed the excellent text by Prof. Mary Boas which I wholeheartedly recommend. Switching off with my co-assistant, the excellent Lucia Hosekova who has helpfully assisted the class previously, I prepared homework assignments, graded them, and gave a weekly review session. In addition, I gave a lecture on the gamma and beta functions and the Bromwich integral method of finding the inverse Laplace transform. Finally, I prepared the review sheet for the final written exam, helped give the review sessions, and prepared the final exam in consultation with both the professor, Professor George Lake and my co-assistant.
Mathematical Methods for Physicists II, Spring 2011This course took up where MMP I left off, including Sturm Liouville theory, a few more special functions, complex analysis, integral equations, group theory, nonlinear dynamics and chaos.Astrophysical Dynamics, Fall 2011Stars, planets, black holes, dark matter and more. This graduate course followed the canonical textbook in the field, Binney and Tremaine's Galactic Dynamics.Advanced Computational Science, Spring 2012Software Engineering.Quantum Mechanics I, Fall 2012 This course covered an introduction to non-relativistic single-particle quantum mechanics. In particular, the basic concepts of quantum mechanics, such as the quantisation of classical systems, the description of observables as operators on a Hilbert space, and the formulation of symmetries were discussed and illustrated with generic examples. We followed the Feynman Lectures III and Sakurai's Modern Quantum Mechanics.

He developed an additional module to AstroViz which can read in halo track information from an SQLite database of a standard format and visualize it in several interesting ways controlled by the user from the ParaView GUI. The final portion of the project integrated the ability to highlight tracks which experience collisions along their path as well as plotting capability for various physical quantities as a function of their collision history.
Master's Thesis, Michael Dimmler, Summer 2013Michael is working with me to consistently simulate the upcoming merger between Andromeda and the Milky Way. We will be deploying novel visualization techniques appropriate for a simulation of this resolution, creating a high resolution 3D movie tracing the merger, and will attempt to "fast forward" time into the far far future, when Milkdromeda itself dissipates to get a glimpse of the end of the Galaxy.
